Focal Point (Energy Field) 1994-2018 Type on paper. 5 x 5 inches.
Focal Point is a simple and elegant text work that has a reflexive aspect insofar as the focusing of the eye in the center of the text reveals the very instrument of the focus in conceptual (and perceptual) terms. The word 'eye' is transformed by extending the e vertically and horizontally virtually indefinitely, the word forming a field of energy that is represented conceptually (e = energy in physics), with an optical quality that makes the notion of energy palpable. Focal Point could be considered a form of Concrete Poetry, a pioneering genre that emphasized the typographical, visual or 'concrete' aspects of written language. This work is consistent with some of the criteria of this genre, and yet it also seems to depart from it in that Focal Point seems more conceptual than poetic.
